Monday 11/11/2019: Lecture on the Brasilian Health Care System and Bolsonaro government reforms

In the framework of the MSc Programmes on "Public Health and Health Policy" and "Primary Health Care", Prof Aquilas Mendes and Dr Jonathan Filippon will deliver an open lecture on the Brazilian healthcare system and the reforms applied by Bolsonaro' s government, on Monday 11th November. The lecture will be delivered in two parts:

Part A (17.15pm - 18.45pm): "Introduction to the Brazilian healthcare system" Prof Aquilas Mendes

The lecture aims to analyze the trends within the Brazilian universal public health system in the context of the ongoing structural crisis of capitalism, articulating the interests of capital and the state. The deepening of the capitalist crisis and the rise of for-profit capital dominance has been related to the increase of unemployment, social insecurity and the appropriation public funding by the private capital.

The lecture discusses the impact of this crisis to the universal right to health in Brazil, especially from the 1990s, confirming the uncertainties of the Brazilian National Health System (SUS) in terms of its funding and the growing movement of capital ownership over the resources of social and health insurance. The final remarks of the lecture present some proposals to address this situation of instability and underfunding of the Brazilian health system.

Part B (19.00pm - 20.00pm): Panel discussion on the "reforms of the Brazilian healthcare system under Bolsonaro's administration" Prof Aquilas Mendes, Dr Jonathan Filippon

The panel discussion will cover the ongoing reforms of the Brazilian healthcare system under Bolsonaro's administration.
